Share your input on the Currency Policy

The Registration Committee is reviewing the policy this summer and is looking for feedback from Registered Opticians.

The Currency Policy was developed to explain how Registered Opticians can meet the new ongoing currency requirement introduced in 2024. The policy includes a requirement for opticians to maintain at least 500 practice hours over any three-year period.

What kind of feedback is the Committee looking for?

Opticians have been reporting their currency hours for just over a year. Beginning in 2027, opticians who are trending below 500 practice hours will receive notice from the College that they are at risk of not meeting the currency requirement.

We therefore want to check in with registrants to ensure the Currency Policy is inclusive and captures the right professional practice activities. We’ve heard from opticians that there may be additional professional activities that should be recognized towards meeting the currency requirement.

This is your opportunity to share your perspective

If you have an activity that you believe should be included in the policy, we encourage you to complete our survey. This survey is your opportunity to identify these activities and explain how they will support ongoing competence for opticians. In particular, we ask that you share:

What activity should be considered? Be as specific as possible
How will the activity support ongoing competence? For example, how does the activity help opticians maintain or improve their knowledge and skills?
The more details you provide about your suggested activity addition, the more information the Registration Committee will have to consider it.

What we’ll be doing with your feedback

Survey results are anonymous and will be shared with the Registration Committee, the Board of Directors, and College staff for the purpose of stakeholder feedback. Any proposed new activity will be assessed on how relevant it is to maintaining and improving an optician’s professional competence.

How you can participate

We appreciate you taking time to provide feedback. For your participation in the survey, please log the time spent completing the survey as self-directed hours for your professional portfolio. Please click here to complete the survey. The survey will be open until May 25, 2026.
