Information about the annual Continuing Education (CE) requirements can be found on the Professional Portfolio page.
In June 2024, the Quality Assurance Committee made changes to how opticians can count certain activities toward their annual non-accredited, self-directed CE hour requirements. Activities such as supervising a student that were previously limited to 1-2 hours per year can now be claimed on an hour-for-hour basis. The Quality Assurance Committee also determined that opticians will no longer be able to claim 1 non-accredited, self-directed hour for 1000 dispensing hours. This decision is consitent with the purpose of the Professional Portfolio, which is to promote continuing education that falls outside of optician's day-to-day practice. Full details of the changes can be found here.
Accredited CE activities are those that have been reviewed and approved by the College’s Quality Assurance Committee. Please be sure to verify that the accredited CE activities you are completing are accredited by the College of Opticians of Ontario (COO) specifically.
A list of all activities accredited by the COO can be found below. Please note that you will need to reach out to the CE provider of each activity to inquire about registration (see "List of Continuing Education Providers").
